A group of local railway workers founded the original Manchester United football club back in 1878. By 1902 Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Football Club was about to be wound up due to debts, 22 years after their first officially recorded match
The Captain, Harry Stafford, apparently with the help of his St. Bernard called Major, found John Henry Davies and three other local businessmen who were agreeable to investing £500 each and the club was saved

They changed the green and gold colours worn to represent the railway company, then they set about changing the name. Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic were both considered but on 24th April 1902, Manchester Utd was officially born
